Peter King, the Republican congressman from Long Island, is pretty mad after Speaker John Boehner punted on giving $60 billion in aid for the victims of Hurricane Sandy- mad enough to call for America to stop giving money to congressional Republicans. From Slate:
“These Republicans have no problem finding New York when they’re out raising millions of dollars,” King said this morning during a Fox News interview. “They’re in New York all the time filling their pockets with money from New Yorkers. I’m saying right now, anyone from New York or New Jersey who contributes one penny to Congressional Republicans is out of their minds. Because what they did last night was put a knife in the back of New Yorkers and New Jerseyans. It was an absolute disgrace.”
The Congressman is playing with fire here, as many know that infusions of cold, hard, campaign cash are the only thing that keeps politicians alive, metaphorically and literally. It seems that the money for hurricane relief fell victim to nothing but “bad timing,” as the rest of Washington was focused on the fiscal cliff negotiations and money for transportation, bridge repair, and beach replenishment was apparently not as important.
Other things that weren’t victims of bad timing? NASCAR tracks, which still received $70 million.
